We, in Todd County, Are Connected to the Universal Church
We, in Todd County, Are a Part of the Universal Church
We, as human beings have a need to belong and, connection by membership to the universal Church, provides an enormous sense of security to its members scattered across the face of the earth. In parts of the country where Catholics are a distinct minority, as we are in Todd County, Kentucky, it is reassuring for us to know we are related by faith, and are united in the same worship, to over a billion other souls who form the Universal Church.
One of the greatest benefits of being in communion with the Universal Church is we can feel at home and participate in the liturgy in Catholic Churches throughout the world. The liturgy of the Church, which is principally the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, is the same whether celebrated in a small church in Todd County, Kentucky or in a great cathedral in Europe. The words of the Mass may be in a foreign language but anyone who is familiar with the structure of the Mass can participate fully in the celebration.
Even though the Catholic Church in Todd County is small and poor it is no less a vital part of th Body of Christ. "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.... For the body does not consist of one member but of many.... If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it." 1 Cor.12:12-14,24-27
In our small parish in South Central Kentucky we find comfort and satisfaction in knowing we are indeed a living part of the Universal Church.
