One Person's Spirit-Filled Service to Todd County One often hears, "I'm only one person. How can I make a difference to anyone else?" Yet, when one stops to consider, usually someone comes to mind who DOES made a difference in the live of others. Sister Bernadette is one such person. She has been doing so for years in her own quiet way with a discerning mind and a warm smile. How? Here are some examples: Three days a week, Sister Bernadette, with the aid of a parishioner, picks up surplus food from a major grocery and distributes it to those in need regardless of one's race, creed, color, or religious affiliation. She also supervises "Second -Hand Rose," a store on the church property. Donations are processed and then sold to the poor. The money goes into an "Apostolic Fund" which is used to help the poor. What a great recycling process! Sister Bernadette is ever-ready to greet and help (if possible) all who come to her door with any of a whole host of crises. She prays for guidance to determine the person's true concerns/ needs. She then graciously helps in a responsible and Christlike fashion, whether that be direction to an appropriate source, counseling, or some form of financial aid. For the past ten years, Sister Bernadette has been the lifeline for a woman who needs assistance in order to function on her own.She cannot get her Social Security check herself. So, Sister manages it for her. Her job is to be sure that the woman has a place to live, has food to eat, and has her personal needs met. Sister does NOT have power of attorney and she says, "I do not want it." Without this assistance what would have happened to this woman? Besides these direct personal services Sister serves on four boards: Senior Citizens Center -- Treasurer; Helping Hands Clinic -- Treasurer; Ministerial Alliance -- Treasurer; Pennyrile Housing. Each group/organization exists to serve peoples' needs for a variety of reasons. Each group is of great significance to the local communitites. This is how one person makes a difference in the lives of many. Why and How does she do this? In her own words, "There is a need there and I enjoy doing what I can do to help others...I get to see God in those I work with and for."
